POST COMMANDER

JANUARY 4, 2018 VFW POST 12098 NEWSLETTER BY COMMANDER WALTER WARREN

SUBJECT: JANUARY MONTHLY NEWS UPDATE 3 January 2018

Comrades,

To start, let me wish you all a very Happy New Year and hope that the year is beginning well for all of you and your loved ones.

We have begun a new year and that means a lot of new events and opportunities are on the horizon. So it would be nice to see some of our Post membership getting involved. With a Post membership in the nineties it is sad to see only a very small percentage coming out. The December membership meeting almost did not happen as there were only five of us who showed up (the Quorum is 5). True, there are a lot of explanations about not attending sick or health issues, out of town, and work schedule. But we have asked the membership for input on meetings and if better day or time would be nice. It was addressed last July about changing monthly meeting night but no consensus was determined. Some said they did not like going into a bar environment. Well, we are in a church environment now with no alcohol. Still hasn't changed attendance at meetings. Last year we even attempted using the Internet and having the monthly meeting available. This would only have one or two members online. So we stopped this format. ANY IDEAS???? Open to suggestions or ideas. We are also lacking in volunteers to support our normal operational functions. Our JR Vice CDR had to step down due to health reasons. Two of our Trustees had to step down due to work complications and several Committees as well as our Post Surgeon position are lacking a Comrade to help them function. Please, seriously think about stepping forward and assisting the Post in any of these positions.

Next item on the agenda was the motion to name VFW Post 12098 BUCKEYE after our Past Commander Henry 'HANK' Pasinski that was originally mentioned in September 2017 after our flag raising ceremony in his Honor. This was researched and National said it was acceptable and needed to be put to membership for a vote. The motion to change our Post name was brought up during the November membership meeting. I sent out a letter with a Ballot attached in November when I sent out the December News Update with a suspense of January 4th to be back to Post HQ. Of the "88” ballots sent out plus adding ballots to our Auxiliary and so far I have received back "”THREE”” and my vote. So the ballot will be put to a vote at our next general membership meeting on January 11th. If I receive any emailed or US postal delivered ballots before the 11th they will be counted at the meeting. Otherwise the ballot count that night will carry. If additional consideration is desired from the vote (OPTION THREE on ballot) – we will conduct it. A very poor showing, especially since many of you may have known Comrade Commander Pasinski.

Another matter is membership. We have been successful in gaining a few new members and gained a few comrades who have transferred to Post 12098. But District, Department, and National still say we need about 12 new members for the 2017-2018 year. If you are a yearly member don't forget to renew – having a financial problem – contact our SR Vice CDR Comrade Ray Jelewski and maybe we can help. But we all should speak with fellow veterans about joining our organization and getting involved in the Buckeye community.

The City of Buckeye is coming around and showing interest in our veterans. The City of Buckeye had attendees at our flag raising, they put a tremendous amount of effort in supporting the Veterans Day Parade and they were inspirational in arranging for the Traveling Vietnam Wall to be in Buckeye for Veterans Week 2017. It was an amazing opportunity for Buckeye residents. Over 9,000 visitors came to Earl Edgar Park during the four-day visit to see the Wall and pay respect. I truly hope you all had the opportunity to have been there. The SR Vice CDR Comrade Jelewski and myself were at our table daily and had an opportunity to speak with a few of you. And a small number of our membership stepped forward and assisted in providing an Overwatch of the Wall while in our City.

Annually the City of Buckeye has also held a Veterans Lift Up Event at Odyssey High School on Verrado Way in February. This is the third year and the Lift Up Event is on Saturday February 17th from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m.. It begins with a complimentary breakfast being served. And features VA veterans registration, Wellness checks, Resume and Job application assistance, Job services, educational services, and much more. In addition, the Veterans of Wars and American Legion with their Auxiliaries have tables setup to assist the veterans and answer questions. The Post could use a few volunteers to assist Comrade Jelewski at this event.

Other projected activities coming up:

The City of Buckeye if offering a 15-week program for Buckeye residents covering the inner workings of the City of Buckeye, our schools, non-profit organizations, and major businesses. Everything you ever wanted to know about Buckeye. The class begins on February 8th and runs until May 10th. It will be held on Thursday evenings from 6 – 9 p.m.. Contact BVCC for more information and to register.

This past September 15th we conducted a Flag Raising Ceremony on POW/MIA Day to commemorate the new flag pole that we erected at the Post Headquarters co-located with the Buckeye Outreach for Social Services (BOSS) at 501 East Mahoney Avenue in downtown Buckeye. This ceremony went very well and our flag flies proudly outside Post Headquarters with a memorial POW/MIA flag. But after the installation we were thinking that a walkway with a memorial wall at the flag pole would look especially nice. So this is a project that we want to undertake early in 2018. Ideas and suggestions would be appreciated and volunteers to frame-up walkway and build wall as well as donations will be greatly accepted. Help us get the new Post HQ finished. We are in the process of submitting a grant request to the VFW Foundation to assist us in placing two VFW Post signs on the lawn near the streets for recognition.

Another reminder, Memorial Day (May 28th) is fast approaching. The City of Buckeye is already starting to discuss this event. Our Post is always asked to assist with the setting of flags on our veterans graves the Saturday prior to ceremony. Additionally, we assist in setup of chairs and equipment and coordination with the American Legion providing a vigil that weekend and participate in the Memorial Day Ceremony. Please think about participating in this as well as our other upcoming events.

Thank you for your time and hope to see you at a coming meeting.

DECEMBER 2017-COMMANDER'S NEWSLETTER

Holiday greetings, Comrades.

Another month has begun for us.  And days are flying by with 2018 just around the corner.  Our next general membership meeting is on Thursday December 14th beginning at 7 P.M. (1900 hours).  We would like to invite you to attend a meeting at our new Post Headquarters in the Buckeye Outreach for Social Services (BOSS) at the SE corner of East Mahoney Avenue and 5th Street in downtown Buckeye (501 E. Mahoney).  Although our facilities are small they provide a place for the Post to meet and get involved in the Buckeye Community.  After all that is our primary mission to reach out to the veterans in the Buckeye community.

Missed seeing most of you at the Veterans week activities and the Travelling Vietnam Wall ceremonies last month.  A few members did stop at our tent and speak with SR Vice CDR Ray Jalewski and myself.  It was nice to meet those veterans and talk about the Post and events.  The City of Buckeye had asked the Post and the Elk's Lodge to purchase trees and benches for the events at Earl Edgar Park.  Following the closing ceremony on the 12th of November we planted our tree in the Community Garden at the BOSS Building to provide lemons when the tree matures.  This way we will continue to give to the Buckeye Community.   Would like to THANK the Post members who came forward during the ceremonies and assisted with the security watch of the Travelling Vietnam Wall.  Your generous donation of time and efforts are truly appreciated.  It was recognized by the City of Buckeye and we were presented with a copy of the City Proclamation for the Veterans ceremonies during Veterans Week.

Pray all is going well for you and your families.  Comrades, think about coming out and joining us at the next meeting.  This is our last meeting for 2017 and have many projects to discuss.  We want to bring 2018 in with fervor.  Thoughts of starting a monthly dinner for Post or Buckeye community, continuing our association with the BOSS programs, and preparing for the Buckeye Veterans Lift-Up on February 17th.  And we would like to get more involved in programs that assist our brothers and sisters here in Buckeye and the greater Phoenix area.

Another very important matter facing VFW Post 12098 since our move into a permanent facility is consideration of naming the Post.  We installed our Flagpole on POW/MIA Day last September 15th in memorial to Past Commander Hank Pasinski.  A motion has been placed to rename our Post in his honor.  I have attached a ballot for the general membership for your vote.  If you would like to rename the post from 'VFW Post 12098 Buckeye' to the "Hank Pasinski VFW Post 12098".   We have set a deadline date of January 4th for ballots to be returned to us.  That way we have time to tally before our January membership meeting on the 11th.
So think about joining us for the next membership meeting.  If your membership has expired no problem we can discuss it or you know of new veterans eligible to join our membership bring them along.  Or contact SR Vice Cdr Jalewski or myself and we can discuss it.

Thank you.  Wishing all of you and your families a Very Merry Christmas and a prosperous, happy New Year.  Hoping to hear from you soon.  Even if only a note that you can not help at this time.

Take care and God Bless.

Comrades,

Missed most of you at our last monthly membership meeting.  Pray all is going well for you and your families.  If you have not already heard the City of Buckeye has arranged for the visiting Vietnam Wall to be in Buckeye from the 8th to the 12th of November.  VFW Post 12098 and the American Legion Post 53 have been asked to provide overwatch and security for the Wall during that time.  We are to provide one VFW volunteer to perform the duty with a brother or sister from the Legion.

At this time I am asking all membership to look at their schedules and see if you would be available for one or more four-hour shifts during the timeframe from Wednesday 8 November starting at 1600 (4 PM) through the 12th of November about 1600 when the Wall will be dismantled for movement.  I have attached a signup page showing available times.  Please think about it and either email me or call and I will gladly enter your name and contact number on the master plan.  I have to submit a roster to the City of Buckeye at our next meeting on the 7th of November.

Events - the Vietnam Wall will arrive in Buckeye at the MEC campus at Verrado Way and I-10 about 1400 on the 8th.  A motorcade led by members of Full Metal Jacket and supporting motorcycle clubs will depart south on Verrado Way passing the Odyssey Preparatory Academy at 1500 hours.  A safety brief will be conducted about 1450.  At MC85 the motorcade escorted by Buckeye Police will turn west and proceed through downtown Buckeye to Miller Road/First Street.  Hoping for a good turnout downtown for reception.  Downtown Buckeye will be lined with flags in Honor of the Vietnam Wall arrival.  At the intersection of Miller Road and MC85 the motorcade will turn south and proceed to Earl Edgar Park projected arrival is 1535.  The trailer will be parked for the evening and our function as security will begin.

On Thursday the 9th we will begin erection of the Wall at 0800 and volunteers are welcome.  At Noon, 1200 hours, a ceremony will begin welcoming the Vietnam Wall back to Buckeye and ceremonies will be conducted daily through Sunday.  Reveille at 0700 daily, 1200 hour ceremonies on the 9th, 10th, and 11th, and 1800 hour ceremonies for retreat.  On Sunday the 12th, the afternoon ceremony will begin at 1400.  And volunteers will be needed to dismantle the travelling Wall for movement.

Also on the 11th of November the City of Buckeye will have our annual Veterans Day Parade.  All are welcome and marchers are invited to join the Post leadership for this activity.  Line up will begin at 0900 and Parade starts at 1000 hours.

Additionally, WALMART is working with our brothers and sisters of American Legion Post 53 to provide a 'free' dinner for Veterans (minor charge for others) at Post 53 located at the corner of 4th Street and Narramore Avenue from 1400 to 1700.

Comrades, think about coming out and joining us.  As I mentioned in previous letters our Post has finally found a permanent location where we can grow and develop some worthwhile programs.  We are in the Buckeye Outreach for Social Services building at the SE corner of 5th Street and East Mahoney in the old Mt Pleasant church.  We have kitchen facilities so would like to begin monthly dinners to develop camaraderie amongst our members.  Sorry we do not have canteen facilities.

So think about joining us for the activities during Veterans Week and start coming to our events..  If your membership has expired or you know of new veterans eligible to join our membership bring them along.  Or contact me and we can discuss.  Thank you.  Hoping to hear from you soon.  Even if only a note that you can not help at this time.
